Winter Sport Safety
As the snow begins to blanket the slopes and the ice rinks open up, winter sports enthusiasts dust off their gear and eagerly anticipate the thrill of skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. These sports are exhilarating, but any sport involving snow, ice, cold temperatures, or gravity can also cause injury. Whether you’re preparing to head for the resorts or the rinks, let’s share some helpful reminders for staying safe.
When engaging in winter sports outdoors, appropriate clothing is a must to ward off the cold and wet and reduce the risk of injury due to catching or snagging. This includes wearing layers of warm clothing, such as a base layer, a mid-layer, and an outer layer. Additionally, make sure to wear waterproof and windproof clothing to help keep you warm and dry. Wear a hat and warm gloves or mittens to protect your head and hands from the cold.
Protective gear is a must-have in your winter sports kit, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner. This gear, ranging from helmets and gloves to padding and secured eye gear, is designed to shield you from potential injuries. Helmets, for instance, should be ATSM-certified for safety and fit snugly on your head to provide optimal protection. Likewise, properly fitting ski goggles will shield your eyes from flying ice and snow kicked up by your skis.
Before heading out for any winter sports activity, check the weather conditions first. This will help ensure that you are aware of any potential hazards that could be present due to extreme weather conditions, such as high winds or icy roads. Additionally, checking the weather will help you plan appropriately and dress accordingly to stay safe and comfortable while engaging in your chosen activity. If your activity is happening on the slopes, be aware that weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains–so come prepared for anything.
When participating in winter sports activities, it is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. This means being mindful of other people who may be on the slopes (or ice) with you and being aware of any obstacles or hazards that may be present, such as trees or rocks, which could cause an accident if not avoided.
Finally, it is important to know your limits when engaging in winter sports activities. Overexerting yourself can put you at risk of injury or illness due to cold exposure or exhaustion from physical activity levels that are too strenuous for your current fitness level. Make sure to start slowly and increase intensity gradually to enjoy your chosen activity safely without putting yourself at unnecessary risk.
