Summer Bicycle Safety: What You Need to Know

June is officially Bike Month in Colorado, and on June 26, thousands of cyclists will observe Summer Bike to Work Day–as much for fitness as for helping to improve air quality with reduced emissions. Even so, between high-traffic areas and all those two-lane mountain roads, bicycling in Colorado comes with its own set of risks. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe on two wheels while enjoying the benefits of bicycling.

Wear Appropriate Gear

The cornerstone of bicycle safety is wearing the right gear. Always wear a certified helmet to protect your head in case of a fall or collision. Additionally, consider wearing reflective clothing or accessories, especially if you plan to ride during early morning or evening hours. Proper footwear and padded gloves can also help enhance comfort and control.

Maintain Your Bicycle

Before hitting the road, ensure your bicycle is in good working condition. Regularly check the brakes, tire pressure, and chain. A well-maintained bike performs better and reduces the risk of mechanical failures that could lead to accidents.

Obey Traffic Rules

Cyclists must adhere to the same traffic laws as motorists. This includes stopping at red lights and stop signs, riding in the direction of traffic, and using hand signals when turning. Being predictable and visible to other road users is crucial for preventing accidents.

Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions

Always stay focused on your surroundings when cycling. Avoid using headphones or engaging in activities that divert your attention from the road. Keeping an eye out for obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles can significantly reduce the likelihood of an accident.

Use Bike Lanes and Paths

Whenever possible, use designated bike lanes and paths. These areas are specifically designed to accommodate cyclists and provide a safer environment than riding on busy roads. However, always remain vigilant and watch for potential hazards even in these safer zones.

Be Cautious in Poor Weather Conditions

Summer storms can come without warning, leading to slippery roads and reduced visibility. If you are caught in a storm, consider taking a break until conditions improve. If you must continue riding, slow down and be extra cautious to maintain control and avoid accidents.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable cycling experience this summer. Remember, accidents can happen despite taking precautions. If you’re injured in a bicycle accident caused by someone else’s negligence, don’t hesitate to contact our personal injury attorneys for a consultation to see how we can assist you.
