St. Patrick’s Day Safety: Tips for Celebrating Responsibly

St. Patrick’s Day Safety

Over the centuries, St. Patrick’s Day has evolved from a religious feast day into a variety of festivals across the globe every March 17, celebrating Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, and a lot of green (including plenty of green beer). In fact, here in the U.S., St. Patrick’s Day is the third most popular drinking holiday of the year (just below New Year’s and the Fourth of July).

St. Patrick’s Day is often synonymous with revelry and merrymaking, with parties and parades taking center stage. Yet, amidst the fun and frolic, it is critical to remember our responsibility towards ourselves and others, particularly when it comes to safe partying and avoiding impaired driving. One unfortunate statistic: a drunk driving fatality occurs once every 38 seconds during St. Patrick’s Day. Let’s review some common-sense tips to be responsible and to stay safe.

Plan Ahead for Safe Transportation

One of the most critical aspects of St. Patrick’s Day safety is ensuring you have a secure way to get home if you plan to drink. Designating a sober driver ahead of time, using ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft, staying in a nearby hotel, or planning to stay overnight at a friend’s place are all excellent preventative measures. Remember, even one alcoholic beverage can impair your ability to drive safely. It could endanger not only your life but also the lives of others on the road.

St. Patrick’s Day Party Safely: Know Your Limits

As you celebrate, remember to party responsibly. Monitor your alcohol intake, stay hydrated, and avoid risky behaviors like binge drinking or mixing drugs and alcohol. It’s also crucial to always watch your drink to prevent someone from adding something without your knowledge.

Recognize the Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning is a severe and potentially fatal consequence of drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period. Symptoms may include confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, blue-tinged or pale skin, low body temperature, and unconsciousness. If you suspect someone has alcohol poisoning, call 911 immediately, even if you’re unsure. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Everyone loves a good time. However, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to mean compromising your safety or the safety of others.
