Did you know there’s such a thing as National Play Outside Day? It is celebrated the first Saturday of every month–the next one is Saturday, August 2, 2024. It’s a perfect reminder for kids (and parents and grandparents) to step away from screens and enjoy the great outdoors. Playing outside has countless benefits, from physical exercise to developing social skills. Here are some practical tips to help keep your kids safe while playing outside, whether in the neighborhood or at a local park.
Whenever possible, accompany your younger children while they play outside. Designate a responsible adult or older sibling to supervise them if you can’t be there. Regularly checking in on them ensures they stay safe and avoid potentially dangerous situations.
For older children and teens, before your kids head out, set clear boundaries about where they can and cannot go. Make sure they understand the importance of staying within these limits. Discussing rules about not talking to strangers and coming home before dark will also add layers of safety.
If your kids are riding bicycles, scooters, or skateboards, ensure they wear helmets and other necessary protective gear like knee and elbow pads. This equipment can significantly reduce the risk of injury in case of falls or accidents.
Educate your children on the basics of traffic safety. Teach them to look both ways before crossing the street, to use crosswalks, and to never run into the road. Emphasize the importance of being aware of their surroundings when playing near streets or parking lots.
Select parks and playgrounds that are well-maintained and age-appropriate for your children. Ensure that play structures are in good condition and free from hazards such as sharp edges or broken parts. A quick inspection of the area before allowing your child to play can reduce the risk of playground injuries.
If your kids play outside, have them check in with you at specific times. This way, you can make sure they’re still safe and accounted for. It’s also a good idea to have a designated time for them to come home.
While outdoor play is essential for your child’s development and enjoyment, their safety should always be a top priority. Remember that accidents can still happen even when practicing basic safety. If you or your child is injured outside due to someone’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation to cover the cost of treatment and recovery.
